On being a Cowboy….to dip or not to dip

If there is one cowboy habit I really hate it is dipping. It is just plain gross. I get that it is habit that many have had for years. I get that many started really young. But it is just bad for you. I won’t get on my soapbox and rant and rave instead I will introduce you to an alternative. Because anyone can criticize, but few offer solutions.

Even though none of my friends do it, I have been going to rodeos long enough to recognize a user. I was sitting across the bar from a very attractive cowboy at the Iron Cowboy in Dallas and he smiled at me and I smiled back. We chatted back and forth for a few minutes and then he picked up a beer can to spit into. So so unattractive.

For the last 8 months I have been working in a store that sells tobacco. I had no idea how many men dip in this area. Lots of first responders either smoke or dip. I can kind of understand that. But which came first the chicken or the egg.  Every now and again I will ask if they want to stop and they say “Sure”. So why don’t they just? Because it isn’t easy. I hear you have to try and try and try.

I was talking to a woman that buys her husband’s dip. She made a face when asking for his brand and flavor. Then she muttered I wish he would quit. I asked her if he like coffee. When she replied yes I told her I wanted to share something with her called Cowboy Coffee Chew. I gave her a can and told her to let her husband try it. He could mix it with his chew to try to ween himself off. Or just give her a break from the spitting.

Cowboy Coffee Chew is a tobacco-less chew. It is made from coffee, creamer, and honey. It comes in a tin, like dip. It is an alternative to using tobacco. The extra benefit is the boost of energy you get from the caffeine. I do not dip/chew but I tried it. I am a coffee addict. so I figured why not. Of course I didn’t quite know what to do with it.  So I essentially just ate it. It was tasty.  I wanted the authentic experience so where do you go to learn how to do stuff? You Tube. I learned how to pinch and pack my lip. It was not a good look for me. But I liked the idea that I could have coffee anytime without a cup. So now I pinch a bit and chew.

I interviewed the owner of Cowboy Coffee Chew to find out more about the product and the company. They have a unique product and you may find them all over social media connecting with his many Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram followers. And boy what an interesting guy.

My Interview with Cowboy Coffee Chew

cSc: How did you get started?

CCC: I got sick on Copenhagen when I was in 9th grade and started chewing dry coffee ever since.  Found a mixture that tasted great, packed well & I could use to ENERGIZE myself.

cSc: Do you consider yourself a caffeine addict? How much do you dip a day? Do you still drink coffee?

CCC:I love Coffee!I am addicted to Coffee!  I love the tree, the fruit & the harvest to consumption.  I don’t chew tobacco, but I chew coffee 5-10 times a day.  Drink about 2-5 cups daily and think the bean when consumed has amazing health benefits.

cSc: You seem connected to the Cowboy world? Why?

CCC: I am from Wisconsin, not really Cowboy Country, but I have been bless to have a farming family. My grandfather milked cows and my father owned a Deere™ dealership. Due to  being a Hesston™ dealer and free tickets, he use to attend the NFR every year in Vegas when I was a kid so I learned a lot from him. I think cowboys and farmers are so unappreciated and I wanted to help them first.

cSc:How do you see your product impacting the world of those who dip?

CCC: I think most alternatives are developed by non-users and usually taste terrible.  Coffee has a VAST following, it tastes great and I think caffeine helps curb nicotine cravings. Plus I chew it daily so I am a product of the product!  We have shipped all over the world, from Australia, New Zealand, UK, Canada, India, Norway, Sweden, Russia, S. Korea to name a few, plus we send a lot of the Coffee Chew to US troops in Afghanistan & Iran.

cSc:Who do you see as your direct competition?

CCC: Copenhagen™, Skoal™ and all Big Tobacco products.

cSc: What is your competitive advantage?

CCC: I care about people.  Sure I’m a drug dealer, but Caffeine in a natural form is actually very good for you.

cSc: Have you considered marketing to the wives and girlfriends of men who dip?

CCC: About 25-30% of our orders come from Ladies.  Easier to kiss Coffee Cowboy vs a Copenhagen™ Cowboy!

cSc: How long have you been selling commercially?

CCC: We launched on eBay, Amazon & our web store in January 2014

cSc: Where do you advertise?  I know that you are all over social media.

CCC: Mostly in the Internet, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest.  We also have a full page ad in the PBR official program.

cSc: What do you do besides making coffee chew?

CCC:I actually don’t make it, I have a manufacturer that makes it for me.  I have a friend that owns a coffee shop and work closely with him.  We actually buy green beans then he roasts and grinds them to my specs.  Its good coffee and as I said before I love COFFEE so it had to be.

Fun Fact: The coffee bean is the seed of the cherry that the coffee tree produces. So is coffee a fruit?

cSc: Favorite thing to do when not working?

CCC: I like to spend time with my family, garden, hunt, fish and have an appreciation towards learning.

cSc: Tell me about the feedback you get?

CCC: I’ve gotten a lot of good stories about people quitting.  We’ve helped a lot of high school kids quit and all the way up to the older guys.  Some don’t even chew, they just love the taste along with having Caffeine Energy in a Can that they can review take anywhere & anytime.

This is a great interview. I have never dipped or chewed as I can stand the taste. However, I have been looking for something that I could dip without the nasty taste or spitting. I used to buy the shredded beef jerky in a can. I recently won the CCC drawing on twitter and am currently waiting for the product to arrive in the mail.

I am new to reading blogs, but I am loving your blogs.
