Road trips are the vacations I dream about. My first road trip was when I was 5. My mom, grandmother, aunt, cousin and myself drove cross country from Philadelphia to Oceanside, California. Often it is said that you don’t have memories that young. But I will tell you I have so many snippets of that month. I remember getting in my Uncle’s brand new Plymouth Fury and heading on our adventure.
The only thing I remember about the actual drive was a few stops for meals. At 5 I was an everyday coffee drinker. When my mom would order our breakfast drinks the waitress (it’s the 70s) would bring the milk to me and the cup of coffee to my mom and we would switch. Then there was the infamous temper tantrum that my cousin had. She was crying that she wanted a corned beef sandwich and didnt believe that we were out. This is the most memorable scene, she screamed “I can smell it!”. And yes she could because I had thrown my corned beef sandwich up. That traumatized her to this day.
I have so many memories of my Uncle’s house on Boxwood Road, the visits to Disney Land, and the cold water beaches of Oceanside. I spent the night at my cousin Sharon’s apartment and we had some really good cookies.
Road trips are one of my favorite ways to vacation.
